Finding Connection
Painting from a place that already feels like home.
Over the last week I’ve been working on a series of paintings that answer the question I’ve been carrying with me: Does this create a sense of belonging?
The answer surprised me a little, though perhaps it shouldn’t have. I found myself returning to photographs I’d taken over the years in my mother’s garden.
She has created such a beautiful place. I love walking through it with her, noticing not only what she has planted, but also the little surprises that appear on their own. Every visit feels a little different.
When I’m there, I feel a deep sense of belonging. In her garden. With her. In the spaces she has created. There is connectedness, safety, and peace. Painting these flowers brings me right back to that feeling, and that’s exactly how I want to feel while I’m making the work.

For my warm-ups this week, I’ve been painting quick little studies of subjects that make me smile. I’m trying to keep the energy simple and playful, staying close to this idea of connection and belonging. They’re creatures I’d like to spend time with.
I’m feeling good with the paint. I’m feeling good about the direction the work is taking. It seems to be unfolding without too much effort on my part. I’m less worried about the outcome and more interested in simply showing up each day to see what happens.
My time in North Carolina is coming to a close. It’s getting wicked hot here, and soon I’ll be heading back to Maine.
I’m looking forward to seeing what’s blooming in Mom’s garden.

What lovely thoughts and observations. I love gardening and sharing bouquets, wishing I had more close by to share with. This place we live in has six months of cold winter type weather, can be confining. Then spring comes, the flowers pop up and grow through the summer/fall season bringing some renewed spirit to our lives.
Absolutely beautiful. The art, the words, the feeling. Thank you for sharing.
